Insect Protein- how does the production work?

How does the production of insect protein work? The insect species used in petgood's products is the black soldier fly. In this article, we will tell you more about how it is bred, lives, and how the production takes place.

The welfare of the insects

Insects are just like cows, pigs, and chickens, they are all living beings. It makes insect protein a non-vegetarian source of protein. Research suggests that insects are not able to feel emotions such as fear or pain. Despite this, petgood and our partners value the insects' welfare and wellbeing, being a vital part of our business.

High-quality food

Antibiotics and growth hormones often occur along with traditional animal husbandry. This can then be passed on to dogs through the food they eat and as a result, can lead to antibiotic resistance. Insects are a natural animal protein source unlike traditional animal protein sources such as beef, pork, and chicken. This is because insects grow quickly by themselves and are, therefore, free of antibiotics and growth hormones. Our insects live on organic waste, and these by-products are plant-based and of high quality.

And then?

An important issue in animal husbandry is how the end of the animals' lives is handled. When the insects are fully grown, they are frozen, which means that they go into hibernation and dormancy. This condition prevents the insect from suffering in the subsequent process.

We are proud to work with highly ranked partners in this area, and who value the well-being of insects as much as we do. Even though it is a difficult subject, we do our very best to constantly improve the well-being of insects - which is close to our hearts.
